Deep within the captivating rolling fields, resided a shepherd boy. His life was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His only responsibility was mainly to tend to his herd of rams.
Their gentle baas and the murmuring of the wind through the lone tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, guarding his charges imbued in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
Yet, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for company. In one such instance out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty here plot.
Stories of wild beasts hunting on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and played a prank on the inhabitants.
One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is attacking my sheep!” The scared villagers rushed up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy laughed at the puzzle on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf actually come to prey the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to protect only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the town only to receive a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
The story of this shepherd boy has been handed down generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the importance of honesty, the consequences of lying and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as appropriate today as it was in the past.
